Muay Thai on Koh Phangan: Prices, Gyms and a First Class

Most people who end up in a Muay Thai ring on Koh Phangan did not plan it. They came for yoga, or for quiet, and then rode past a gym at four in the afternoon with the pads cracking and thirty people skipping in the shade, and thought: maybe.

It is one of the easier things on this island to try once. Nearly every gym sells a single class, nobody minds that you have never done it, and two hours later you will know whether you want more. What follows is what it costs, where the gyms are, and the parts that are less pleasant than the photographs.

Where the gyms are

The island's Muay Thai sits almost entirely along the south-west, between Thong Sala and Ban Tai, which is also where most villas and long-stay rooms are. From the hills above Maduawan it is a ten to twenty minute ride to any of them.

Thong Sala and Nai Wok. Phangan Muay Thai & Fitness is in Thong Sala itself, at 214/9 Moo 1 — the oldest gym on the island, running for well over fifteen years, with a fitness gym on site. Group training is Monday to Saturday, 08:00–10:00 and 16:00–18:00. Just west, in Nai Wok, Diamond Muay Thai runs a camp with accommodation, ice baths and yoga attached.

Ban Tai. Venom Muay Thai sits at 116/18 Ban Tai, around 100 metres from the beach, with group classes Monday to Saturday at 08:00–10:00 and 16:00–18:00 and two-hour sessions. Jomhod Muay Thai is also in Ban Tai, with mornings 08:00–09:30 and evenings 16:00–17:30 Monday to Saturday, privates through the middle of the day and Sundays by private booking only.

Wok Tum. Martial Arts Academy, on the west coast near Wok Tum, was founded by the Muay Thai and kickboxing champion Pascal Schroth. It is the broadest programme on the island — Muay Thai plus kickboxing, boxing, strength, mobility and junior classes — and the one that feels most like a modern gym rather than a traditional camp.

What it costs

Prices as listed by the gyms in late 2026. Confirm before you go; they move.

  • Single group class: 300–450 THB depending on the gym. Jomhod lists 300 THB for one group class, Phangan Muay Thai and Venom 400 THB for a day, Diamond 300 THB for a first-time taster, Martial Arts Academy 450 THB as a drop-in.
  • A week of one session a day: around 2,000 THB at Phangan Muay Thai, Venom and Diamond. Two sessions a day is roughly 3,000 THB.
  • A month: about 7,000 THB for once daily and 10,000 THB for twice daily at the traditional camps. Martial Arts Academy is higher — 12,500 THB a month for its all-access pass.
  • Private one-to-one: 700 THB an hour at Phangan Muay Thai and Diamond; from 1,000 THB at Martial Arts Academy.
  • Train and stay: Venom from 5,500 THB a week for a bamboo hut and 7,500 for a fighters' cabin or air-conditioned double, twice-daily training included. Diamond from 7,000 THB a week with a room, two meals a day, ice baths and yoga.

If you are here for four or five nights, buy single classes. The weekly rate only pays off if you genuinely train six days, and most first-timers cannot walk properly on day three.

What a first class is like

Two hours, usually: skipping, shadow boxing, then technique, then rounds on the pads with a trainer, then bag work, then conditioning that the trainer will enjoy more than you do. Beginners are taken in the same session as everyone else and quietly given simpler drills. Nobody is going to make you spar.

Bring your own water — more than you think. The hard part on this island is not the kicking, it is the humidity. Morning classes at 08:00 are noticeably kinder than 16:00 in March and April, when the afternoon session starts in full heat and the shade arrives late.

Gloves and shin pads are usually available to borrow or rent; Martial Arts Academy charges 100 baht a session for rental. Hand wraps are the one thing worth buying yourself, for about a hundred baht at any gym shop. Borrowed gloves are borrowed sweat: rinse off straight after class rather than riding home salty, and skip training with open cuts or a fresh tattoo — ringworm and infected grazes are the standard island souvenirs, not broken noses.

Check your travel insurance before the first class. A lot of policies treat martial arts as a contact sport and exclude it, or exclude it the moment there is any sparring. That matters more here than usual, because the ride home afterwards is on a scooter in the dark.

Fight nights

Several small stadiums around Thong Sala, Ban Tai and Haad Rin run fight nights with six to eight bouts, typically starting around 21:00 with doors an hour before. Tickets are commonly listed at 800 THB for standard seating and 1,200 THB ringside, with higher VIP tiers at some venues. Venom holds a fight night on the 28th of each month.

The honest caveat: the schedule is not fixed and the ticket websites are not always current. Dates shift, events are added around the full moon, and some cards are heavily weighted towards novice foreigners fighting other novice foreigners. Ask at a gym, or look at the roadside banners, which are updated faster than anything online. Card quality varies enormously; the atmosphere rarely does.

If you are staying up here

Villa Ullassa is about ten minutes from the Thong Sala and Nai Wok gyms and fifteen from Ban Tai, which makes an 08:00 class and a slow morning afterwards entirely possible. Come back, swim, sit in the steam room, do nothing. That combination — two hard hours, then a day of quiet — is the version of this most guests end up preferring to a full training camp.

Villa Ullassa is a private four-bedroom house on a jungle hillside above Maduawan, with a 180° sunset sea view, a saltwater pool and room for eight.
