Diving Sail Rock from Koh Phangan: Costs, Boats, Seasons

Sail Rock lies about an hour from Chaloklum, closer than from Koh Tao. What a two-tank day costs, when boats get cancelled, and how it compares to Koh Tao.

Sail Rock is the reason to dive here

Koh Phangan has one genuinely world-class dive site, and it isn't on Koh Phangan. Sail Rock — Hin Bai — is a granite pinnacle sitting roughly halfway between Phangan and Koh Tao, rising about 15 metres above the surface and dropping more than 40 metres below it. Because it stands alone in open water, it holds fish in a way the coastal reefs don't: giant grouper, chevron and great barracuda, queenfish, jacks and trevally in clouds. It also has a vertical chimney you can swim up, from around 18 metres to about 6.

The useful fact for anyone staying on Phangan is geography. Sail Rock is closer to Chaloklum, on the north coast, than it is to Koh Tao. Operators quote crossings of an hour to an hour and a quarter from Chaloklum. That means a shorter, calmer morning than the same dive booked from Koh Tao or Samui.

Everything else within reach is pleasant rather than remarkable: Koh Ma off Mae Haad, Little Sail Rock, an old oil platform, and the reefs along the west coast. If you have dived Bali, the Similans or Egypt, set your expectations at "warm, easy, fishy" rather than spectacular.

What a day actually looks like

Dive shops cluster in Chaloklum, with others at Haad Yao, Haad Salad and Baan Tai. Chaloklum has been the island's diving village for three decades — Chaloklum Diving opened there in 1995, Haad Yao Divers on the west coast in 1997 — so there is a real depth of local instructors rather than a seasonal shopfront.

Departure times vary and matter more than anything else you'll compare. The Divers Boat, for instance, runs a 10.00 departure from Chaloklum, returning around 16.00, and goes to Sail Rock daily. Other boats leave earlier. Ask before you book, because the drive north is part of your day: allow about 25 to 30 minutes from the Thong Sala area to Chaloklum, and add buffer for the sharper corners on the Chaloklum road if you're on a scooter.

One side effect of that 10.00 slot is that it works for people coming off the 08.00 Lomprayah from Samui, diving two tanks at Sail Rock and catching the 17.00 boat back. If friends are staying on Samui, it is a rare same-day option.

Costs, and the honest comparison with Koh Tao

Prices published for 2026 by Phangan operators give you a working idea:

  • A two-dive Sail Rock trip: around 3,200 THB, including full kit, a guide and a hot meal on board.
  • A try-dive day at Sail Rock or Koh Ma with no certification: around 4,200 THB, usually with a maximum of two students per instructor.
  • SSI Open Water: 12,900 THB at The Dive Inn in Chaloklum, three to four days depending on the shop and how fast you take to the water.
  • Nitrox, where offered, is often a small surcharge — one west-coast shop lists 32% at 250 THB a tank.

Now the comparison. Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places on earth to learn, with two-tank local fun dives commonly advertised at 1,000 to 1,200 THB and Advanced Open Water in the 8,500 to 10,000 THB range. On paper, Phangan looks expensive.

In practice you are buying two different things. Koh Tao's cheap dives are to its own busy local sites, taught in bigger groups on bigger boats, in a town built around dive-school volume. Phangan shops run small — several cap groups at four divers per guide — and their headline trip is the best site in the Gulf rather than a training bay. If your only goal is the cheapest possible certification card, go to Koh Tao and don't feel bad about it. If you want two quiet dives at Sail Rock, with a guide who isn't managing twelve people, and to be back on the west coast in time for sunset, dive from here.

Whale sharks: real, but not a booking reason

Sail Rock is one of the better whale shark spots in the Gulf; one Phangan freediving school counts over a hundred days of sightings in 2017 alone. That is also the point — it's counted in days, because it's luck.

Chaloklum Diving's own note is worth repeating: whale sharks tend to prefer the deeper offshore pinnacles, Sail Rock, Southwest and Chumphon, and if you meet one you should keep your distance and switch your flash off. Book the dive for the site. Treat the shark as a gift.

Snorkelling and freediving instead

You don't need a tank. Most Sail Rock boats take snorkellers, usually at a lower rate, and some shops let freedivers join the same trips. Snorkellers should know that Sail Rock is open water with real current — it's a strong-swimmer's outing, not a float.

Freediving has quietly become one of the things Phangan does well. Apnea Koh Phangan runs an introduction day at Sail Rock before you commit to anything, a two-day Freediver course working to about 12 metres on day one and up to 20 on day two, and a one-day static breath-hold clinic listed at 3,000 THB. Their teaching leans on breathing and relaxation work, which is why it appeals to people who came here for yoga and end up in the water.

Seasons, safety and the boring admin

Sail Rock trips run year-round, but the north-east monsoon in late autumn brings wind and swell to the north coast, and boats do get cancelled at short notice. If diving is the centrepiece of your trip, come outside that window, or build a spare day into the plan — the same logic applies to ferries, which we cover in the journal.

Two practical points people forget. The nearest recompression facilities are on Koh Samui, not on Phangan; reputable shops here are affiliated to that network and will tell you so if you ask. And Samui airport is roughly two hours away by ferry and road, so schedule your last dive a clear day before you fly.

Finally, check what a quoted price includes. Phangan shops generally fold in equipment, guide, breakfast or lunch and certification materials, so the number you are quoted tends to be the number you pay — but ask, rather than assume.

From Villa Ullassa

Chaloklum is about half an hour's drive from the villa, north across the island's middle. A 10.00 departure means leaving after a slow breakfast on the terrace, and you'll be back up the hill with salt in your hair well before the light goes over Hin Kong.

Villa Ullassa is a private four-bedroom house on a jungle hillside above Maduawan, with a 180° sunset sea view, a saltwater pool and room for eight.
